When Costume Jewelry Just Isn't Enough

Diamond and sapphire rose gold rings created by Jane Becker for JB Jewels

There's so much jewelry in the marketplace at this moment that it can feel overwhelming.

What happens if you find a piece of jewelry with a design you love, but it is made of synthetic stones and base metal?

This is what happened with one of my good clients. He likes to treat his wife to beautiful jewelry and she found this design. So he wanted to give her these rings made of real gold and fine gems.

He commissioned me to create these three stacking rings in rose gold, two containing all around sapphires and one with all around diamonds.

My challenge was sourcing sapphires all of the same shape and size. Unlike synthetic gems, which are cut by a machine to be mass-produced, sapphires must be cut by hand.

Therefore, I had to source diamond-cut sapphires that matched in color, clarity, and exact measurements. If any of the gems did not match perfectly, you would be able to see the difference once they were set in the ring.

Similarly, the diamonds must be calibrated to ensure they are the same size, clarity and color, so they look perfect when they are set in the ring.

Another challenge we faced was ensuring the ring was an exact fit for my client's wife. That is because this style cannot be resized, as the gems go all the way around.

My client wanted to surprise his wife, and we wouldn't be measuring her finger for exact sizing. So, we had to discuss her lifestyle to understand how she would wear the ring. For example, exercise or the weather can make your hands swell, which many people do not realize when customizing a ring.

The final result was something that she loves, and one she will wear for many years to come. She even noted she could tell the real diamonds and sapphires had such life and sparkle compared with the synthetic gems.

TIP: If you find a piece of costume jewelry that you love, you can recreate it to last a lifetime. Most pieces of costume jewelry can be duplicated in gold, silver, or platinum.
