Turning a Family Heirloom into Four Contemporary Styles

When asked for advice on fine jewelry, I always tell people the same thing: “Trust the experts.” Working with someone who has years of experience takes the stress and worry out of the process.

Earlier this year, a former neighbor contacted me and told me her grandmother suddenly passed away.

She was left with an antique diamond circle pin and requested guidance on how to maintain the integrity of the pin while turning it into several new pieces of jewelry.

She had an idea of what she wanted that would compliment her unique style and taste. Using my knowledge of antiques and understanding of the mechanics of making jewelry, I began formulating a design that highlighted the piece’s original integrity.

We came up with four distinct, new pieces:

  • A small ear climber

  • A large ear climber

  • A stud earring

  • A pendant.

Once we agreed on a design, I met with my jeweler and model maker. We created 3D models, discussed the integrity of the gold, and created contemporary pieces from this antique pin. I kept the initial flowers and leaves of the pin, but completely reimagined it to match her personal style.

Once completed, I was thrilled to share the new pieces with her.

She was wowed by the quality, turn-around time, and attention to detail throughout the process.

With decades of experience in this business, I still love finding new challenges and working directly with clients to turn cherished family heirlooms into beautiful and wearable pieces of art.

TIP: Trust the professionals, and dare to take the unexpected route. When you work with someone who understands the mechanics of jewelry design, you’ll be able to preserve the quality and integrity of each piece without compromising your style.

Any questions? I'd love to help you.
