Gems Among Friends

Pearl, emerald and diamond antique bracelet

With over 35 years in the fine jewelry industry, I’ve had the pleasure of building many friendships with my longtime clients. One of these clients recently reached out to me asking if I could help a friend of his sell their fine jewelry.

They both live in Pennsylvania, so this was a fun project to work on virtually and in-person.

His friend shared that the jewelry pieces were simply not her style. She knew she would never wear the items, so rather than redesign anything, she chose to sell everything.

First, I received photos of the collection. Included were:

  • Pearl, emerald and diamond antique bracelet

  • Ruby and diamond earrings

  • Tri-color wedding band

  • Diamond engagement ring

  • Ruby and diamond cocktail ring

Sold as a group: Clockwise from top left, ruby and diamond earrings, tri-color wedding band, diamond engagement ring

Because my friend regularly comes into New York, he wanted to bring the pieces himself rather than have his friend mail them to me.

We met in a secure location near the diamond district and discussed our next steps. I collected the items and locked them away in my vault.

Next, I made appointments with several auction houses and I was able to negotiate favorable offers for all of her five items.

Once I received the offers from the houses, I called my client and shared the information with her. As always, I allow my clients to make the final decision based on the offers collected from the auction houses, the sentimental feelings behind the pieces, and their goals for the sale.

My client made her final decision to sell and we placed the five pieces on auction. After a month or so, the items sold and she was more than happy with the final price.

In general, it is worth the month or two to place an item on auction rather than selling it outright. Please contact me if you’re interested in learning more.

TIP: Always make sure you get several offers before selling your fine jewelry items. This ensures you will get the best price.
