Creating a Custom Ring from an Inherited Diamond

Platinum and diamond man's ring created from an inherited ring, by Jane Becker for JB Jewels

Over my three decades in the jewelry industry, I've met many other jewelry designers. We all have our own unique way of working, whether that be building our own lines of jewelry, representing other designers, or as I do, creating custom pieces.

Recently I was contacted by one of the designers I know. She has a friend who inherited a woman's diamond ring from his mother.

Antique diamond ring with center diamond removed

He wanted to transform it into a custom man's ring using the same center diamond.

We had several conversations over the phone and in-person about the style he preferred.

I encouraged him to look at my website to give him a sense of what I've created for my other clients. There, he saw a custom 18K yellow gold ring I've made several times with a clean bezel-set design (photographed below).

Immediately, I let my client know his diamond is antique-shaped, as well as being an old mine-cut diamond; whereas the ring he wanted to use as a reference, was a modern oval-cut diamond.

Therefore, we agreed on the design of his unique ring and how the final product would look.

He also wanted the ring in white metal and chose to go with platinum (rather than white gold), to better suit his lifestyle.

When I delivered the ring to him, it was everything he expected and more!

Transforming inherited pieces of jewelry into wearable pieces of art is something I truly enjoy doing.

I believe that all jewelry is meant to be enjoyed, and redesigning a piece to your liking can make a world of difference.

Please let me know how I can help you with your next redesign.

TIP: There are many types of white metals. White gold must be maintained and dipped in rhodium every year or so. Opting for platinum means your jewelry will not require as much upkeep, which may better fit with your lifestyle.
