One of my longtime clients recently reached out with a request that spoke directly to this belief. While traveling, she saw a wrap-style ring with emeralds and diamonds that caught her eye. The design was close to perfect, but like most things we find while shopping, it needed a few personal touches to truly make it hers.

She texted me pictures of the original ring and asked if we could make a few minor adjustments. So we began the design journey.

Fine jewelry should be tailored to your exact specifications in color, proportion and style. Just like how you might wish a dress came in a different fabric or a slightly different cut, this client knew that with a few thoughtful changes, this ring could be the one.

Creating the Custom Ring Concept

Sleek, sophisticated and expressive, the sketch reflected her love of emeralds and diamonds set in 18K yellow gold.

From there, we moved to the sourcing stage, which is one of the most intricate parts of any custom piece.

Sourcing the Perfect Emeralds

Finding emeralds to meet her standards was no easy task. Each stone needed to be the exact same vivid green tone: not too light, too dark, or too cloudy. I spent hours at my emerald dealer, sending her photos of various shades and colors of emeralds. Ultimately, she fell in love with the color of emeralds found in a ring of a different style (photographed).

She emphasized which color was her favorite. Not only that, they had to be perfectly matched in size to ensure the final wrap design was seamless.

On top of that, the client lives outside of the U.S., which means our time together in New York City is very limited. So when she’s in town, we make every second count. Together, we review stones, fine-tune designs, and build custom pieces that reflect her taste, lifestyle and vision.

When her custom emerald and diamond ring was finally complete and delivered to her, her response said it all:

"Fits beautifully and even more stunning than I imagined!"

TIP: When dreaming up your custom jewelry piece, don’t settle for “almost perfect.” Save reference images, be clear about your preferences (down to color and size), and trust the process. The result will be uniquely yours, and worth every detail.
