Diamonds and Technology

Diamond engagement ring by Jane Becker for JB Jewels

Thanks to modern technology, you don't have to set foot into the diamond district to purchase a fine diamond any longer. The entire complex process now can be expertly handled entirely online.

Recently, I connected with a client who came highly recommended from a family friend. He wasn't sure where to start when looking for a diamond engagement ring, and didn't have the time to come into Manhattan to view diamonds in person.

To understand the exact style his future fiancé would want, I first spoke to her best friend. She explained her taste and lifestyle to me, including how often she will be taking the ring on and off and how active she is.

Afterward, I spoke to my client to understand his budget and answer any questions about creating a ring, selecting a diamond, my process, the style, and even shipment of the ring.

As with all of my clients, I am more than happy to take the time to explain exactly how fine jewelry is created.

Following our conversation, I was able to show him three diamonds within his budget. We went through each diamond and its characteristics to determine the best one for her unique ring.

To show him these diamonds, I called him along with my diamond dealer and we walked through each diamond's characteristics.

This thorough conversation answered all of his questions and made him feel as if he were there with us in person.

Along with the photos of the diamond, I also shared with him the Diamond DNA, which is a detailed report of the diamond. With a 360-degree view of the diamond, the DNA report includes the origin of the stone, the light dispersion, the light reflection and refraction, and even the person who cut the diamond.

Not all diamonds have a Diamond DNA report attached to them, but I prefer diamonds that do have one. This is to provide my clients an extra sense of certainty and knowledge about the gem they chose.

After reviewing the Diamond DNA reports with him, he took a few days to decide which would be the best choice and purchased his diamond sight unseen. Our conversations got him exactly what he was looking for, and his now fiancé loves her new engagement ring just as much!

If you're not able to make it into Manhattan and meet with me in person, I can still walk you step-by-step through the entire diamond buying process. Since we have this wonderful technology, we no longer even need to meet in person.

TIP:  Before you purchase a fine gemstone, be sure to get as much information about the stone as possible. This may include a Diamond DNA report or GIA (Gemological Institute of America) report.
