As I always say, jewelry is more than just gold and stones, every piece carries meaning. This story is a perfect example of that.

To remember and celebrate his parents’ lives and their 75 years of marriage, a client reached out to me to create a custom ring in their honor.

We sat down together to talk through his ideas. With his vision and my experience in custom jewelry design, we created a one-of-a-kind platinum ring that he could wear every day as a physical reminder of his parents.

The original engagement ring — *His mother’s engagement ring*

A major inspiration for the ring, he mentioned that his mother wore her engagement ring every day from the day his father proposed. She never took it off her hand.

He told me he wanted a heavy ring, something he could feel as a constant reminder of his parents and their enduring love.

Platinum was the perfect choice for that, offering more weight than gold.

He also shared that he had inherited his mother’s diamond engagement ring and wanted to reuse the center diamond in the new design. Since diamond was her birthstone, it felt especially meaningful.

He also wanted to include his father’s birthstone—peridot.

I hand-matched a pair of peridots to complement the diamond. Then, I worked with my team to design the ring and bring it to life.

At his request, we engraved his parents’ names and their wedding anniversary inside the band.

There were a few leftover diamonds from his mother’s original ring, which he gifted to another family member, extending the legacy even further.

The final ring turned out exactly as he had hoped. Now, he wears it every day as a beautiful tribute to his parents and the life they built together.

TIP: Platinum is two and a half times more dense than gold. It is also typically contains 90-95% pure platinum, whereas gold can range from 58-90% pure, depending on the karat weight. Finally, platinum requires less daily upkeep and longterm care, versus white gold. This is something to consider when designing a custom piece of fine jewelry.
